a90a0f5c8a Propagate errors sensibly from proxied IS requests 
When we're proxying Matrix endpoints, parse out Matrix error
responses and turn them into SynapseErrors so they can be
propagated sensibly upstream.

0cdb32fc43 Remove redundant try/except clauses 
The `except SynapseError` clauses were pointless because the wrapped functions
would never throw a `SynapseError` (they either throw a `CodeMessageException`
or a `RuntimeError`).

The `except CodeMessageException` is now also pointless because the caller
treats all exceptions equally, so we may as well just throw the
`CodeMessageException`.

838810b76a Broaden the conditions for locally_rejecting invites 
The logic for marking invites as locally rejected was all well and good, but
didn't happen when the remote server returned a 500, or wasn't reachable, or
had no DNS, or whatever.

Just expand the except clause to catch everything.

Fixes https://github.com/matrix-org/synapse/issues/761.

Also:
 - change the REST endpoint to have a "S" on the end (so it's now /read_markers)
 - change the content of the m.read_up_to event to have the key "event_id" instead of "marker".

29574fd5b3 Reduce federation presence replication traffic 
This is mainly done by moving the calculation of where to send presence
updates from the presence handler to the transaction queue, so we only
need to send the presence event (and not the destinations) across the
replication connection. Before we were duplicating by sending the full
state across once per destination.

64765e5199 When we do an invite rejection, save the signed leave event to the db 
During a rejection of an invite received over federation, we ask a remote
server to make us a `leave` event, then sign it, then send that with
`send_leave`.

We were saving the *unsigned* version of the event (which has a different event
id to the signed version) to our db (and sending it to the clients), whereas
other servers in the room will have seen the *signed* version. We're not aware
of any actual problems that caused, except that it makes the database confusing
to look at and generally leaves the room in a weird state.

30bcbf775a Accept join events from all servers 
Make sure that we accept join events from any server, rather than just the
origin server, to make the federation join dance work correctly.

e9dd8370b0 Add functions to presence to support remote syncs 
The TCP replication protocol streams deltas of who has started or
stopped syncing. This is different from the HTTP API which periodically
sends the full list of users who are syncing. This commit adds support
for the new TCP style of sending deltas.

f40c2db05a Stop preserve_fn leaking context into the reactor 
Fix a bug in ``logcontext.preserve_fn`` which made it leak context into the
reactor, and add a test for it.

Also, get rid of ``logcontext.reset_context_after_deferred``, which tried to do
the same thing but had its own, different, set of bugs.

5068fb16a5 Refactoring and cleanups 
A few non-functional changes:

* A bunch of docstrings to document types
* Split `EventsStore._persist_events_txn` up a bit. Hopefully it's a bit more
  readable.
* Rephrase `EventFederationStore._update_min_depth_for_room_txn` to avoid
  mind-bending conditional.
* Rephrase rejected/outlier conditional in `_update_outliers_txn` to avoid
  mind-bending conditional.

9ce53a3861 Queue up federation PDUs while a room join is in progress 
This just takes the existing `room_queues` logic and moves it out to
`on_receive_pdu` instead of `_process_received_pdu`, which ensures that we
don't start trying to fetch prev_events and whathaveyou until the join has
completed.

29235901b8 Move FederationServer._handle_new_pdu to FederationHandler 
Unfortunately this significantly increases the size of the already-rather-big
FederationHandler, but the code fits more naturally here, and it paves the way
for the tighter integration that I need between handling incoming PDUs and
doing the join dance.

Other than renaming the existing `FederationHandler.on_receive_pdu` to
`_process_received_pdu` to make way for it, this just consists of the move, and
replacing `self.handler` with `self` and `self` with `self.replication_layer`.

fc2f29c1d0 Fix bugs in the /keys/changes api 
* `get_forward_extremeties_for_room` takes a numeric `stream_ordering`. We were
  passing a `RoomStreamToken`, which meant that it returned the *current*
  extremities, rather than those corresponding to the `from_token`. However:
* `get_state_ids_for_events` required a second ('types') parameter; this meant
  that a `TypeError` was thrown and we ended up acting as though there was *no*
  prev state.
* `get_state_ids_for_events` actually returns a map from event_id to state
  dictionary - just looking up the state keys in it again meant that we acted
  as though there was no prev state. We now check if each member's state has
  changed since *any* of the extremities.

Also add/fix some comments.

2849d3f29d admin,storage: added more administrator functionalities 
administrators can now:
 - Set displayname of users
 - Update user avatars
 - Search for users by user_id
 - Browse all users in a paginated API
 - Reset user passwords
 - Deactivate users

Helpers for doing paginated queries has also been added to storage

be14c24cea Fix rare notifier bug where listeners dont timeout 
There was a race condition that caused the notifier to 'miss' the
timeout notification, since there were no other checks for the timeout
this caused listeners to get stuck in a loop until something happened.

aa09d6b8f0 Rip out more refresh_token code 
We might as well treat all refresh_tokens as invalid. Just return a 403 from
/tokenrefresh, so that we don't have a load of dead, untestable code hanging
around.

Still TODO: removing the table from the schema.

The 'time' caveat on the access tokens was something of a lie, since we weren't
enforcing it; more pertinently its presence stops us ever adding useful time
caveats.

Let's move in the right direction by not lying in our caveats.

Since we're not doing refresh tokens any more, we should start killing off the
dead code paths. /tokenrefresh itself is a bit of a thornier subject, since
there might be apps out there using it, but we can at least not generate
refresh tokens on new logins.

83bcdcee61 Return early on /sync code paths if a '*' filter is used 
This is currently very conservative in that it only does this if there is no
`since` token. This limits the risk to clients likely to be doing one-off
syncs (like bridges), but does mean that normal human clients won't benefit
from the time savings here. If the savings are large enough, I would consider
generalising this to just check the filter.

2ef617bc06 Fix infinite typing bug 
There's a bug somewhere that causes typing notifications to not be timed
out properly. By adding a paranoia timer and using correct inequalities
notifications should stop being stuck, even if it the root cause hasn't
been fixed.

d04e2ff3a4 Fix incredubly slow back pagination query 
If a client didn't specify a from token when paginating backwards
synapse would attempt to query the (global) maximum topological token.
This a) doesn't make much sense since they're room specific and b) there
are no indices that lets postgres do this efficiently.

5d9546f9 introduced a change to synapse behaviour, in that failures in the
interactive-auth process would return the flows and params data as well as an
error code (as specced in https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-doc/pull/397).

That change exposed a bug in Riot which would make it request a new validation
token (and send a new email) each time it got a 401 with a `flows` parameter
(see https://github.com/vector-im/vector-web/issues/2447 and the fix at
https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-react-sdk/pull/510).

To preserve compatibility with broken versions of Riot, grandfather in the old
behaviour for the email validation stage.

This requires a bit of fettling, because I want to return a helpful error
message too but we don't want to distinguish between unknown user and invalid
password. To avoid hardcoding the error message into 15 places in the code,
I've had to refactor a few methods to return None instead of throwing.

1168cbd54d Allow invites via 3pid to bypass sender sig check 
When a server sends a third party invite another server may be the one
that the inviting user registers with. In this case it is that remote
server that will issue an actual invitation, and wants to do it "in the
name of" the original invitee. However, the new proper invite will not
be signed by the original server, and thus other servers would reject
the invite if it was seen as coming from the original user.

To fix this, a special case has been added to the auth rules whereby
another server can send an invite "in the name of" another server's
user, so long as that user had previously issued a third party invite
that is now being accepted.

Add a timeout parameter for controlling how long synapse will wait
for responses from remote servers. For servers that fail include how
they failed to make it easier to debug.

Fetch keys from different servers in parallel rather than in series.

Set the default timeout to 10s.

Fix AttributeError when bind_dn is not defined. 
In case one does not define bind_dn in ldap configuration, filter
attribute is not declared. Since auth code only uses ldap_filter attribute
when according LDAP mode is selected, it is safe to only declare the
attribute in that case.

It also returns the last IP where we saw that device, so there is some dancing

* `RegistrationHandler.appservice_register` no longer issues an access token:
  instead it is left for the caller to do it. (There are two of these, one in
  `synapse/rest/client/v1/register.py`, which now simply calls
  `AuthHandler.issue_access_token`, and the other in
  `synapse/rest/client/v2_alpha/register.py`, which is covered below).

* In `synapse/rest/client/v2_alpha/register.py`, move the generation of
  access_tokens into `_create_registration_details`. This means that the normal
  flow no longer needs to call `AuthHandler.issue_access_token`; the
  shared-secret flow can tell `RegistrationHandler.register` not to generate a
  token; and the appservice flow continues to work despite the above change.

f863a52cea Add device_id support to /login 
Add a 'devices' table to the storage, as well as a 'device_id' column to
refresh_tokens.

Allow the client to pass a device_id, and initial_device_display_name, to
/login. If login is successful, then register the device in the devices table
if it wasn't known already. If no device_id was supplied, make one up.

Associate the device_id with the access token and refresh token, so that we can
get at it again later. Ensure that the device_id is copied from the refresh
token to the access_token when the token is refreshed.

dcfd71aa4c Refactor login flow 
Make sure that we have the canonical user_id *before* calling
get_login_tuple_for_user_id.

Replace login_with_password with a method which just validates the password,
and have the caller call get_login_tuple_for_user_id. This brings the password
flow into line with the other flows, and will give us a place to register the
device_id if necessary.

0a32208e5d Rework ldap integration with ldap3 
Use the pure-python ldap3 library, which eliminates the need for a
system dependency.

Offer both a `search` and `simple_bind` mode, for more sophisticated
ldap scenarios.
- `search` tries to find a matching DN within the `user_base` while
  employing the `user_filter`, then tries the bind when a single
  matching DN was found.
- `simple_bind` tries the bind against a specific DN by combining the
  localpart and `user_base`

Offer support for STARTTLS on a plain connection.

The configuration was changed to reflect these new possibilities.

9f1800fba8 Remove registered_users from the distributor. 
The only place that was observed was to set the profile. I've made it
so that the profile is set within store.register in the same transaction
that creates the user.

This required some slight changes to the registration code for upgrading
guest users, since it previously relied on the distributor swallowing errors
if the profile already existed.

- At the very least, this TypeError caused logins to fail on my own
  running instance of Synapse, and the simple (explicit) UTF-8

Loading push rules now happens in the datastore, so we can remove

1620578b13 Shuffle when we get the signing_key attribute. 
Wait until we sign a message to get the signing key from the homeserver
config. This means that the message handler can be created without
having a signing key in the config which means that separate processes
like the pusher that don't send messages and don't need to sign them can
still access the handlers.

If rejecting a remote invite fails with an error response don't fail
the entire request; instead mark the invite as locally rejected.

This fixes the bug where users can get stuck invites which they can
neither accept nor reject.

Attempt to update the appropriate `m.room.aliases` event after deleting
an alias. This may fail due to the deleter not being in the room.

Will also check if the canonical alias of the event is set to the

590fbbef03 Add config to create guest account on 3pid invite 
Currently, when a 3pid invite request is sent to an identity server, it
includes a provisioned guest access token. This allows the link in the,
say, invite email to include the guest access token ensuring that the
same account is used each time the link is clicked.

This flow has a number of flaws, including when using different servers
or servers that have guest access disabled.

For now, we keep this implementation but hide it behind a config option
until a better flow is implemented.

60a0f81c7a Add a /replication API for extracting the updates that happened on 
synapse

This is necessary for replicating the data in synapse to be visible to a
separate service because presence and typing notifications aren't stored
in a database so won't be visible to another process.

This API can be used to either get the raw data by requesting the tables
themselves or to just receive notifications for updates by following the
streams meta-stream.

Returns updates for each table requested a JSON array of arrays with a
row for each row in the table.

Each table is prefixed by a header row with the: name of the table,
current stream_id position for the table, number of rows, number of
columns and the names of the columns.
This is followed by the rows that have been added to the server since
the requester last asked.

The API has a timeout and is hooked up to the notifier so that a slave
can long poll for updates.

33300673b7 Generate guest access token on 3pid invites 
This means that following the same link across multiple sessions or
devices can re-use the same guest account.

Note that this is somewhat of an abuse vector; we can't throw up
captchas on this flow, so this is a way of registering ephemeral
accounts for spam, whose sign-up we don't rate limit.

There should be no difference between guest users and non-guest users in terms
of access to messages. Define the semantics of the is_peeking argument to

a4e278bfe7 Respond to federated invite with non-empty context 
Currently, we magically perform an extra database hit to find the
inviter, and use this to guess where we should send the event. Instead,
fill in a valid context, so that other callers relying on the context
actually have one.

Side-effects:
 * Stop reporting None as displayname and avatar_url in some cases
 * Joining a room by alias populates guest-ness in join event
 * Remove unspec'd PUT version of /join/<room_id_or_alias> which has not
   been called on matrix.org according to logs
 * Stop recording access_token_id on /join/room_id - currently we don't
   record it on /join/room_alias; I can try to thread it through at some
   point.

4d54d87c3e Mitigate against incorrect old state in /sync. 
There have been reports from the field that servers occasionally have
incorrect notions of what the old state of a room is. This proves
problematic as /sync relies on a correct old state.
This patch makes /sync specifically include in the 'state' key any
current state events that haven't been correctly included.

79a1c0574b Allocate guest user IDs numericcally 
The current random IDs are ugly and confusing when presented in UIs.
This makes them prettier and easier to read.

Also, disable non-automated registration of numeric IDs so that we don't
need to worry so much about people carving out our automated address
space and us needing to keep retrying ID registration.

Firing the 'user_joined_room' signal everytime a guest hits /events
causes all presence for that room to be returned in the stream. This may
sound helpful, but causes clients to tightloop calling /events.

In general, guest users should get the initial presence from (room)
intial sync and so we don't require presence to sbsequently come down
the event stream.

fddedd51d9 Fix a few race conditions in the state calculation 
Be a bit more careful about how we calculate the state to be returned by
/sync. In a few places, it was possible for /sync to return slightly later
state than that represented by the next_batch token and the timeline. In
particular, the following cases were susceptible:

* On a full state sync, for an active room
* During a per-room incremental sync with a timeline gap
* When the user has just joined a room. (Refactor check_joined_room to make it
  less magical)

Also, use store.get_state_for_events() (and thus the existing stategroups) to
calculate the state corresponding to a particular sync position, rather than
state_handler.compute_event_context(), which recalculates from first principles
(and tends to miss some state).

5ab4b0afe8 Make handlers.sync return a state dictionary, instead of an event list. 
Basically this moves the process of flattening the existing dictionary into a
list up to rest.client.*, instead of doing it in handlers.sync. This simplifies
a bit of the code in handlers.sync, but it is also going to be somewhat
beneficial in the next stage of my hacking on SPEC-254.

f522f50a08 Allow guests to register and call /events?room_id= 
This follows the same flows-based flow as regular registration, but as
the only implemented flow has no requirements, it auto-succeeds. In the
future, other flows (e.g. captcha) may be required, so clients should
treat this like the regular registration flow choices.

1b9802a0d9 Split the sections of EventStreamHandler.get_stream that handle presence 
into separate functions.

This makes the code a bit easier to read, and means that we can reuse
the logic when implementing the v2 sync API.

1e101ed4a4 Clamp the "to" token for /rooms/{roomId}/messages to when the user left 
the room.

There isn't a way for the client to learn a valid "to" token for a room
that they have left in the C-S API but that doesn't stop a client making
one up.

a0b181bd17 Remove completely unused concepts from codebase 
Removes device_id and ClientInfo

device_id is never actually written, and the matrix.org DB has no
non-null entries for it. Right now, it's just cluttering up code.

This doesn't remove the columns from the database, because that's
fiddly.

2d3462714e Issue macaroons as opaque auth tokens 
This just replaces random bytes with macaroons. The macaroons are not
inspected by the client or server.

In particular, they claim to have an expiry time, but nothing verifies
that they have not expired.

Follow-up commits will actually enforce the expiration, and allow for
token refresh.

a4d62ba36a Fix v2_alpha registration. Add unit tests. 
V2 Registration forced everyone (including ASes) to create a password for a
user, when ASes should be able to omit passwords. Also unbreak AS registration
in general which checked too early if the given username was claimed by an AS;
it was checked before knowing if the AS was the one doing the registration! Add
unit tests for AS reg, user reg and disabled_registration flag.

d88e20cdb9 Fix bug where synapse was sending AS user queries incorrectly. 
Bug introduced in 92b20713d7
which reversed the comparison when checking if a user existed

e9c908ebc0 Completely replace fallback auth for C/S V2: 
* Now only the auth part goes to fallback, not the whole operation
 * Auth fallback is a normal API endpoint, not a static page
 * Params like the recaptcha pubkey can just live in the config
Involves a little engineering on JsonResource so its servlets aren't always forced to return JSON. I should document this more, in fact I'll do that now.

813e54bd5b Fix more AS sender ID thinkos. 
Specifically, the ASes own user ID wasn't being treated as 'exclusive' so
a human could nab it. Also, the HS would needlessly send user queries to the
AS for its own user ID.

72a4de2ce6 Use consumeErrors=True on all DeferredLists. 
This is so that the DeferredLists actually consume the error instead of
propogating down the non-existent errback chain. This should reduce the

96d4bf9012 Modify API for SimpleHttpClient.get_json and update usages. 
Previously, this would only return the HTTP body as JSON, and discard other
response information (e.g. the HTTP response code). This has now been changed
to throw a CodeMessageException on a non-2xx response, with the response code
and body, which can then be parsed as JSON.

Affected modules include:
 - Registration/Login (when using an email for IS auth)

The simple fix doesn't work here because room creation also involves
unknown room IDs. The check relies on the presence of m.room.create for
