Veilid and VeilidChat 2024 Year in Review | 2025-01-04 | Veilid Team | blog/page |
|
Now that 2024 has come to an end, we’re taking a moment to reflect on an amazing year for Veilid and VeilidChat.
It’s been a year full of growth, innovation, and connecting with a community that shares our passion for privacy and secure communication. Staying true to our mission of defending human and civil rights, we’ve made some big strides towards v1.0 releases for both projects, and we couldn’t have done it without your support.
We’ve been hard at work on Veilid, rolling out two minor updates, versions 0.3.0 and 0.4.0, and tackling seven patch releases along the way. Each release made the platform smoother, faster, and more secure. VeilidChat also saw plenty of action with its own pair of minor updates and five patches, improving the app and getting it ever closer to becoming a viable secure messenger.
The open-source community around Veilid has been incredible this year. We welcomed 41 merged community contributions to Veilid and three to VeilidChat. These additions brought fresh ideas and helpful improvements that we’re really proud to include in the projects. It’s always inspiring to see the creativity and dedication of people coming together to make something great.
We’re thrilled to see so many people supporting the Veilid network and testing VeilidChat. Between 125 and 300 headless nodes are now running veilid-server, and the VeilidChat beta has been installed 615 times on iOS and 961 times on Android. It’s exciting to see these numbers grow as more folks discover what we’re building.
This year, we hit the road to connect with the cybersecurity and tech community at conferences including HOPE, CactusCon, DEF CON, HackSpaceCon, and BSides Las Vegas, Orlando, and Birmingham. Veilid also made appearances on stage at local DEF CON meetups like DC702, DC716, and DC256, and was even presented at. These events were a great way to share our progress, get feedback, and meet amazing people who care about privacy as much as we do.
We also got to tell our story on some fantastic podcasts, including Breaking Badness, Off The Hook, Hacker History, Bare Knuckles and Brass Tacks, and the CyberSecurityCares fundraiser live stream. Talking about our work and hearing from others in the field is always a highlight for us.
We are particularly proud of Veilid’s visionary and primary developer, Christien “Dildog” Rioux’s interview on the Rust Careers blog.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we raised approximately $16,500 this year. These donations help keep the lights on and help us to keep pushing forward on our mission to enable developers to build and maintain privacy-focused apps for everyone.
2024 was an incredible year. We’re excited to carry this momentum into 2025, keep building awesome tools, and continue towards making privacy and secure communication a reality for all.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Here’s to more progress, collaboration, and success in the year ahead!
