- **February 26:** The three-masted *James B. Chester* is found by the *Marathon*, southwest of the Azores, completely deserted. The sails are in bad condition. Tables, chairs are overturned, drawers pulled out, clothes and personal items are scattered on the deck. No traces of blood, weapons, or evidence of struggle are noticed. Neither water nor provisions are missing, the cargo is intact, and the ship is in excellent condition.
